The Detective Series Columbo

I'd like to think that it's not because I'm getting older that I gravitate to movies and series from twenty years ago or more, but for some reason lately, my husband and I are finding more enjoyment catching up with old programs, shows and series, like Columbo.

You might think that Columbo is predictable, because he always uses the, "Oh and one more thing...." line when you think he's about to leave the room, but he's full of surprises and he's going to stay and aggravate the villain just one more time with another question. He's not so predictable in solving crimes, as we've been catching up with Columbo for the past few months.  Saturday nights, have been our night to watch the great detective, Columbo solve a crime.  We have now watched most of them and have even noticed repeat actors in the main villain roll and learned that Peter Falk was friends with several of his repeat stars and even his wife starred in several of his Columbo movies.  Some of the trivia about the show is interesting.

We also enjoy it because Columbo is an escape from reality.  Today's movies seemed to be filled with subtle messages, political bias and a lot of implicit undertones of the signs of our time. Yes, most of that has been in films the past few decades, but at least some series and movies kept to their original premise and didn't go too far out from their original design.  Lately, when we've tried a new movie, even if we have watched the trailer and thought it looked good, we have been more disappointed then pleased.  A recent new movie we watched was so shocking, and misrepresented by the trailer, I decided not to even review it, but maybe I should at some point, because if you are a parent and you don't want your child exposed to certain explicit scenes, this is a movie not to watch.  But I digress, back to Columbo.

Here's a very nice article written about the Columbo series by the BBC.

Why the world still loves 1970's detective show, Columbo.

Even 50 years since its first season began on 15th September 1971, Columbo remains a TV show like no other. The US series with Peter Falk in the title role – as the ramshackle, eccentric, cigar-chomping, raincoated LAPD homicide detective Lieutenant Columbo – revolutionized what a cop show could be. Here was a murder mystery where the murder was no mystery: audiences saw the deadly deed at the start of each episode, invariably carried out by one of LA's rich and famous in an attempt to preserve their esteemed reputation.

Other trivial little points of interest is watching Columbo's raincoat age, mostly the same suit and tie in each episode and as old as his Peugeot was in the beginning, his little car aged along the way with dings and scratches too.

One of our favorite Peter Falk Movies is The In-Laws, with Alan Arkin.  Extremely funny and memorable if you enjoy family moments were reciting a particular line from a movie fits a real life moment, then this is one movie with classic lines to remember for good laughs.

Oh and in case you are wondering what we have been watching during the week?  We have been been watching the original series of Hawaii Five-0.
