December weather in the US south can produce severe weather

December weather in the southern US can often bring severe storms.

In the first tornado outbreak of December 2021, more than 100 tornadoes touched down on the night of Dec. 10 into Dec. 11. Those twisters wreaked havoc across nine states, leaving many towns unrecognizable and claiming the lives of at least 90 people. The second major outbreak occurred on Dec. 15 when an additional 57 tornadoes were spawned across the Midwest

It was an assumption of mine that the gulf moisture usually affected the southern states east of Texas more during the winter, then Texas. This article from Accuweather described exactly that and made sense because of the location of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and western Florida, the moisture from the Gulf would flow northward but take it's direction east ward because the winds from the plains are naturally blowing eastward.  It makes sense that the moisture is captured this way and the more severe storms occur from east Texas and go further east.  We do have severe storms, but I've always noticed they are more tame after passing the Dallas area and then pick up as the storms reach East Texas.

All right, this storm has passed us, all good, have power, yay! I did get a good video of the storm coming in The bigger part of this storm is gaining steam and moving to east Texas and Louisiana and the other most southern gulf states on it's easterly path. Stay safe!

Texas had 5 tornadoes swirling minor to severe damage on Tuesday, December 13, 2022.

    Texas had 5 Tornadoes

At least five tornadoes were confirmed in Texas during a storm outbreak Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

Three of the tornadoes were in Tarrant County, with the strongest having an EF-1 rating. One damage track was seen in the city of Grapevine, near the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

The weather service said there was also an EF-2 tornado with 125 mph winds in Wise County, as well a tornado just west of the city of Paris. Damage surveys will be conducted in those communities Wednesday. Based on radar and damage reports, the National Weather Service said there could have been as many as 12 tornadoes in Texas Tuesday that they have not yet confirmed.

The storms have carved a path of destruction across Oklahoma and the Dallas-Fort Worth area Tuesday and injured at least seven people. They’re part of a larger storm system that threatens more damage in the South and blizzard conditions in states farther north.

There's a new update to the amount of tornadoes from the severe weather event on Tuesday. Now the tally is up to 10 tornadoes; several EF0's and several EF1's. The state entity that evaluates the debris fields from these severe storm events are still on the ground determining the damage. Grapevine, Texas was damaged the most during this storm. For those of you not familiar with Grapevine, the city is known for their Grand Ole Opry, and also for the Gaylord Texan that produces amazing winter world's every year with ice sculptures. There's also the Grapevine Mills mall that is close by and unfortunately suffered damaged too.
