The Fate of Facebook

Facebook has been a very prominent social website in most of our lives, good and bad. This year, they have even changed their name in the face of many lawsuits, to rebrand their Facebook name with the new name of Meta.

The founder of the company formerly known as Facebook, Zuckerberg has seen his net worth plummet by nearly $71 billion this year, according to calculations by Bloomberg. Zuckerberg, now 38, has slipped from No. 3 on the Forbes billionaires list last year to No. 22 today.

Stocks have fallen this year to Facebooks demise, losing 60% of their value. Do you think FB/Meta will be able to continue being one of the most dominant social websites, or will there be another website to compete with FB at some point?

Mark Zuckerberg's net worth has dropped $71 Billion this year.

Fears of layoffs as Facebook parent Meta reportedly announces hiring freeze

Meta employees have been warned of potential layoffs after the Facebook parent company announced on Thursday it would freeze hiring and “further restructure”, Bloomberg News has reported.

In company communication with employees, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg cited the uncertain macroeconomic environment for the changes. The announcement comes after several tech companies have been forced to slash headcount in recent months, as advertisers trim spending in anticipation of a recession.

Facebook is having cracks in their organization. Preparing for this many layoffs and freezing any new hires.

“Our plan is to steadily reduce headcount growth over the next year,” he said. “Many teams are going to shrink so we can shift energy to other areas, and I wanted to give our leaders the ability to decide within their teams where to double down, where to backfill attrition, and where to restructure teams while minimizing thrash to the long-term initiatives.”

I can't even say what I want to say about this quote. I'll let you decide.

Meta's Shares Are a Hard Sell as Good Old Facebook Days Are Over

Originally posted on Bloomberg about Facebooks continual downward motion.

Since Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement a year ago of a name change and strategy overhaul for the owner of Facebook, the stock has wiped out more than half the gain it had seen since its initial public offering a decade ago. That’s cost Meta $600 billion in market value and a spot in the elite club of the US’s 10 biggest companies.

Analysts predict Meta’s revenue will drop this year for the first time ever, as competition and cooling economies, among other factors, cut into ad sales. User growth at its flagship product, Facebook, has slowedas a younger generation flocks to newer sites like TikTok. Meanwhile, the company is spending billions to realize Zuckerberg’s vision of the metaverse, that still-to-be-realized virtual world where people will work, shop and socialize.

Personally, I think FB/Meta has lost some trust.  I don't think it's enough for a full bail, because the people that I know have an addiction with FB.

Where do you stand on FB and it's future?

Top Facebook Consultant Admits That the Metaverse Is Absolutely Terrible

Meta advisor John Carmack — the digital pioneer behind the blockbuster videogame "Doom" — isn't impressed with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision for the "metaverse."

But he also argued that Meta is currently too focused on and "paranoid" about the quality of its Horizon Worlds spaces and avatars, and should instead try to get as many people into those spaces as possible — a problem that a $1,499.99 VR headset isn't exactly going to solve. I've written often how I feel about VR.

I think you can get lost in it. VR like in any other type of gaming should be for short entertainment, not an all day obsession. I worry about children not being monitored and same for adults with addictions that can't pull themselves away from the VR headset and back to reality.

Facebook Detects 400 Android and iOS Apps Stealing Users Log-in Credentials

Meta Platforms on Friday disclosed that it had identified over 400 malicious apps on Android and iOS that it said targeted online users with the goal of stealing their Facebook login information. "These apps were listed on the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store and disguised as photo editors, games, VPN services, business apps, and other utilities to trick people into downloading them," the social media behemoth said in a report shared with The Hacker News. 42.6% of the rogue apps were photo editors, followed by business utilities (15.4%), phone utilities (14.1%), games (11.7%), VPNs (11.7%),and lifestyle apps (4.4%). Interestingly, a majority of the iOS apps posed as ads manager tools for Meta and its Facebook subsidiary. All the apps in question have been taken down from both app stores. The list of 402 apps (355 Android and 47 iOS apps) can be accessed here.

Please note, I put in bold the last sentence from this article, so you can click on the link to see if you've been to any of these scam apps through FB. Does anyone see anything wrong with this picture? FB is always having breaches in security. Not to be self-aggrandizing of Friend's Realm, but isn't it time to try something new, where your privacy is taken seriously, and there is no advertising. I also want to add a shameless plug, but there are several website developed by the Realm developers that are about to come on line soon. You will love them. Give Friend's Realm a chance and look for the launches of some really great niche websites soon!

Big Short Michael Burry Says Facebook Is In Big Trouble

The list of critics and detractors of Mark Zuckerberg is growing day by day. There is, of course, the financial community, analysts and investors, who are merciless about Meta Platforms (META) , the entrepreneur's empire of social networks. Meta shares are down 62.3% since January, reflecting a fall in market value of nearly $570 billion.

His billionaire peers, Elon Musk and Mark Cuban, mock him. Musk nicknamed him "Zuck the Fourteenth" -- an apparent reference to the French king, famous for his hubris and excess, Louis XIV.

Many are quick to say that the Metaverse is Zuckerberg's biggest mistake. The billionaire, whose personal fortune has shrunk by more than $77.7 billion since January, continues to plead patience.

Is the writing on the wall, or are there are actors out there looking for "a fail" on the horizon? One can expect a decline in any mega website, especially FB as they have had so many privacy disasters alone.

Facebook Fined $25 million by Washington State for Violating Election Law

Yet more lawsuits and more drama with Facebook.

Facebook's parent company Meta has been ordered by a Washington State court to pay $25 million in fines after it found that the social media platform violated Washington’s political disclosure law 822 separate times between 2019 and 2021.

Meta was also ordered to fully comply with the state's election transparency laws, which have existed since 1972, requiring ad sellers to "disclose the names and addresses of political buys, the targets of such ads and, the total number of viewers of each ad.” Facebook argued in court that the laws are unconstitutional.

Meta laying off more than 11,000 employees: Read Zuckerberg’s letter announcing the cuts

“Today I’m sharing some of the most difficult changes we’ve made in Meta’s history,” Zuckerberg said in the letter. “I’ve decided to reduce the size of our team by about 13% and let more than 11,000 of our talented employees go. We are also taking a number of additional steps to become a leaner and more efficient company by cutting discretionary spending and extending our hiring freeze through Q1.”

See Mark Zukerbergs letter to his employees in this article. Zuckerberg is heavily invested in Metaverse VR, believing and banking on VR to be a lifeline to Meta.

Investors have been concerned about Meta’s rising costs and expenses, which jumped 19% year over year in the third quarter to $22.1 billion. The company’s overall sales declined 4% to $27.71 billion in the quarter while its operating income dropped 46% from the previous year to $5.66 billion.

Grand ideas are part of being an entrepreneur, but also having humility, honesty and care for your employees and how your product is perceived should be tantamount.

H&R Block, other tax prep services sending 'sensitive financial information' to Facebook: Report

Companies such as H&R Block, TaxAct, and TaxSlayer have allegedly been sending Facebook "not only information like names and email addresses but often even more detailed information, including data on users’ income, filing status, refund amounts, and dependents’ college scholarship amounts, a report from the Verge said on Tuesday. The information "can be used by the company to power its advertising algorithms," the outlet claimed, and it is "gathered regardless of whether the person using the tax filing service has an account on Facebook or other platforms operated by its owner Meta."

The information was reportedly gathered using Meta Pixel, a Facebook code that the company describes as "a snippet of JavaScript code that allows you to track visitor activity on your website."

Am I the only one that is concerned about my privacy?  Is this really true?

Meta’s new AI is skilled at a ruthless, power-seeking game

Researchers at Meta, Facebook’s parent company, have unveiled an artificial intelligence model, named Cicero after the Roman statesman, that demonstrates skills of negotiation, trickery and forethought. More frequently than not, it wins at Diplomacy, a complex, ruthless strategy game where players forge alliances, craft battle plans and negotiate to conquer a stylized version of Europe.

Cicero, released last week, was able to trick humans into thinking it was real, according to Meta, and can invite players to join alliances, craft invasion plans and negotiate peace deals when needed. The model’s mastery of language surprised some scientists and its creators, who thought this level of sophistication was years away.

But experts said its ability to withhold information, think multiple steps ahead of opponents and outsmart human competitors sparks broader concerns. This type of technology could be used to concoct smarter scams that extort people or create more convincing deep fakes.

I think this is a bit over the top. I've seen enough movies about intelligent AI, like 2001 Space Odyssey, some Star Trek Next Gen episodes (The Borg, Data), The Terminator etc.

What do you think?  Should we be concerned or this is a nothing-burger?
