Greta Thunberg protesting wind energy to save Sami culture

I had to post this from CNN regarding Greta Thunberg protesting windfarms that are being made on reindeer habitats that are integral to the Sami culture. I recalled the posts by another member here about his own family and thought this would be a good post to discuss. I agree with Greta in protection for cultures that are negatively impacted by any encroachment on their lands.

    What are your thoughts?

After reading your article, my thoughts are "they" need to move that windfarm somewhere else or have another solution. I've seen our US government go out of the way to protect endangered species and I would grieve right along with the Sami people, if their reindeer's health and food sources were compromised because of this windfarms location. I'm also mindful that humans do need their power, and believe there can be some appropriate changes for both that can be creatively designed so the reindeer and human's needs are both met. The Sámi people, the only recognized Indigenous group within the European Union, say their centuries-old tradition of reindeer herding is jeopardized by the windfarms in the Fosen region in Central Norway. Among the largest onshore windfarms in Europe, they are made up of 151 wind turbines that stretch 285 feet high. I'm also happy to see that Greta Thunberg sees through this issue and is protesting for the well being of the Sami's reindeer.

It may seem strange to see Greta Thunberg protesting against wind turbines, but this week the Swedish climate activist has joined Indigenous and environmental groups in Norway to do just that.

    Hello.

    Thanks for the Message.

As much as Greta loves a good environmental/protest story, to many (and an increasing number) truth is she is viewed little more than a mouthpiece to others ideological goals.

Sure she has spent a very short time in saami, she still has much to learn. The sami are not all about reindeer herding, Its like saying all Americans 1st nations they are all about buffalo.

Their are somany things that make us sami. in our beliefs and thinking, way of life, view of the world around us and how we interact and belong to the land and life.

The wind turbines is about 1% of the problem we have to deal with.
Global warming is the biggest concern. then their is the swedes, fins, nors, russians, Nato, foreign religion, foreign ideology being forced into our education system and onto sami children and peoples, our way of life and traditions being banned and made illigal.

Not being recognised by the UN or other countries as a peoples or country. Sure we are permitted have a council and saami parliament but that again is just to show how open minded others are to look good and enlightend on the world stage. Much like how the US government allow the 1 nations to have a council but in reality they have no voice in US politics but it looks good. Thats why you will never see a 1st nation chief on the senate, or as a governor, congress.

A lot of what Greta speaks about is based on others "good truth" rather than "actual truth" rather than based on her actual experience.

Well i could go on. but i got i have other tasks to do.

i may be back on here in a couple of week or so. got other things im involved with in Ukraine. im working over their at moment.

    mikel.

    Mikel ~

Thank you for stopping by and sharing your experiences and opinion. Maybe in a weird way Greta has brought more attention to the Sami way of life and perhaps help others to see the beauty of your country, the culture, the spirit part of your foundation and beliefs and the fact that the Sami people deserve to be left alone by other nations that want to influence. I can't even imagine, how a culture could be seen as illegal too? Would I be correct in making the comparison of the native Americans to the Sami people- the comparison being the native Americans were here in North and South America long before the Spaniards, English and French began to colonize....the native Americans were eventually pushed out and sent to land that the American Government did not want. Obviously, the Sami people are not in that predicament of losing their land and culture, but, with all of those countries trying to influence, nothing would surprise me in years to come.

Be safe in Ukraine. I'm sure what you are doing is exceptional.
